Underground Storage Tank Regulations

What you need to know

July 2015, the EPA announced a revision to the 1988 federal underground storage tank (UST) regulations.  The revisions will help prevent and detect UST releases.  The revisions include:

  • Having designated and trained operator with documentation, Class A, B, and C.
  • Conducting walkthrough inspections every 30 days. This includes previously deferred FTCs and AHSs.
  • Testing spill prevention equipment every three years for liquid tightness or use a double walled spill bucket with periodic interstitial monitoring.
  • Testing overfill prevention equipment every three years.
  • Testing containment sumps used for piping interstitial monitoring every three years.
  • Testing release detection equipment annually.
  • Performing release detection on emergency generator tanks (EGT).
  • Using release detection methods on field-constructed tanks (FTC) and airport hydrant systems (AHS).
  • Maintaining vapor and groundwater monitoring records every 30 days for as long as methods are used.

State Program Approval and Indian Country

If your underground storage tank (UST ) system is located in a state with a state program approval (SPA), you must follow the state requirements.  To find information about your state UST regulations visit the EPA underground storage tank contact page.

If your UST system is located in a state without a SPA or in Indian country, you must follow the federal UST regulation.  For additional information about the federal UST requirements, visit the United States Environmental Protection Agency website.
